Ghosts are foes in Pokémon Red, Pokémon Green, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. Not to be confused with Ghost Type Pokémon, Ghosts are actually disguised Pokémon living in the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town. They are identified as Gastly, Haunter and Cubone by the Sliph Scope.

Story[]

"Ghosts appeared in the Pokémon Tower. I think they're the spirits of Pokémon that the Rockets killed."
— Lavender Town Resident

Prior to obtaining the Sliph Scope, strange Ghosts appear inside the Pokémon Tower. They are malicious, possessing the Channelers of the Tower, and drive trainers away. Residents of Lavender Town fear these Ghosts are the restless spirits of Pokémon killed by the malicious criminal organization Team Rocket. This is proven to be true when the ghost of a deceased Marowak begins to haunt the Tower after she is killed protecting her child.

In-game Behavior[]

The Silph Scope must be obtained to identify the Ghosts; if the player goes into battle with a Ghost before he/she has the Scope, the Ghost will immobilize their Pokémon with fear, and when attacked will tell the player to "get out". In this state, they cannot be caught, even by Master Balls. When the Ghost is identified, it will either be a Gastly, Haunter or a Cubone, between the levels of 18-30, depending on species, game and what floor the player is on.
